PURPOSE IS THE NEW LUXURY : How saving the Oceans is a better business than destroying them

Cyrill Gutsch

Parley for the Oceans Founder

Cyrill Gutsch is a German-born designer and creative entrepreneur based in New York City. Originally specialized in both start-ups and in turning struggling companies around, in 2012 Cyrill Gutsch decided to apply his skills to a client vital to us all: The Oceans. He founded Parley for the Oceans as a forum where the creative industries can get together to talk and, most crucially, to act together to protect our life-sustaining ecosystem. “Collaboration and dialogue has always been the nucleus of my work. I am used to working with the best talent and bringing them into an environment that allows “cross intelligence.” Cyrill Gutsch has worked as an independent creative concept developer for major international companies for many years. Bringing together artists, scientists, large corporations, governments, NGOs and environmentalists, he acts as a mediator translating creative energy and environmental expertise into business strategy. In 2001, he co-founded the CCID Center for Media, Knowledge Cultures, Imagination and Development at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, providing a forum for those from the worlds of science and the arts to come together in creative collaborations. In 2012, a meeting with legendary activist Captain Paul Watson, founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and co-founder of Greenpeace, convinced Gutsch to take on the most challenging client, the world’s oceans, with the particular objective of focusing attention on the multiple threats facing this vital ecosystem and on establishing a new business culture where it is more lucrative to protect the oceans than to destroy them. The Parley Ocean Plastic Program aims to draw urgent attention to plastic pollution and its devastating consequences for seabirds, marine life and the human food chain, approaching solutions through a strategy called Parley AIR, built on three key pillars of action: Avoid. Intercept. Redesign. Driven by collaboration and eco innovation, the AIR Strategy, and focuses on the reduction of overall plastic use, reclaiming and upcycling of marine plastic debris, interception of plastic waste before it arrives in the oceans and the ultimate vision of applying green chemistry to reinvent and replace current plastic with an eco-innovative alternative that does not harm the environment. < Career > 2012 - Present: Founder, Parley for the Oceans In 2001, he co-founded the CCID Center for Media, Knowledge Cultures, Imagination and Development at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, providing a forum for those from the worlds of science and the arts to come together in creative collaborations. < Latest Achievements > 2017 : Environmentalist of the Year, Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) Awards at the 28th Annual Waterman’s Ball, USA
